9 Narratives for Our Personal Shadow Work
What personal shadows do you have?
(Not sure what I’m talking about? Get an overview of shadow work here.)
In my book Unmasking the Inner Critic: Lessons for Living an Unconstricted Life, I refer to nine constrictions that might help you identify the personal shadows in your life.
(I call them constrictions because these are negative internal narratives that constrict us emotionally, spiritually, and even physically. They do not only live in our minds, but in our bodies as well.)

Personal Shadows
Read through the following constrictions and identify which one resonates with you the most in this season of your life. If that is too difficult, identify one that you resonated with during a formative period of your life.
I am not good enough.
I am not important.
I am not lovable.
I am alone.
I am worthless.
I am not in control.
I am not free.
I am my trauma.
I do not know who I am.
After you’ve identified which of these constrictions you resonate most with, I invite you to go for a walk, a stroll, or engage in some sort of movement. Create some spaciousness in your life’s rhythm before moving on to the next step.
Personal Shadow Work Prompts:
How does this constricting narrative feel inside your body?
Who helped this constricting narrative develop within your story?
How has it impacted the ways in which you engage your communities?
What fear or experience lies just beneath the surface of this constricting narrative?
How might you sit with this fear or experience, and practice seeing it with soft eyes?
